The Marine Conservation Group (MCG) is a special interest group of NSS. It was formed in 1985, a time when scuba diving was taking off locally as a recreational sport.

iyorsp4 MCG's intention was, and continues to be, to encourage understanding and protection of marine nature in Singapore and Southeast Asia.

Taking its cue from NSS, the group gets its message across through public talks, slide-talks, publications and photo exhibitions. A series of of marine biologhy lectures was one of its first programmes, tapping the specialist skills of Singapore's academics in the field. Public photo exhibitions and booth were put up to celebrate the Year of the Ocean and other marine related events such as ADEX. Other initiatives have notably included the nationally and internationally covered Reef Rescue projects. These involved the translocation of corals under threat. It gave members, including some 400 divers, a chance to get involved in the largest project of its kind in the world.

The group has given feedbacks to the current Singapore Green Plan under NEA and the Masterplan under URA- specifically calling for marine protected areas in our southern islands. The group are involved in consultations with the government, viewing of EIAs and subsequent feedbacks and responses to foreshore development work that have impacts to marine habitats. One of this location is Tanjong Chek Jawa.

In 2003, MCG published the first coffee table book of its kind 'Singapore Waters - Unveiling Our Seas' to showcase Singapore marine biodiversity as well as a historical perspectives of its coastline.
